Hot on the heels of Castle's January Sale announcement, Stuart Tyrrell Developments are launching a BOGOF offer on the Unipod which was recently voted best hardware product of 2004 by our good friends over at Drobe. First off you have to have a Unipod with one function (say USB for example) unlocked. That will set you back £99. Then if you pay £25 for the unlock of another function (IDE) you will be given the third function (Networking) for free, saving you £25. Like Castle, this offer is for the month of January only and will be applied to all orders made before the 31st January 2005. Link: Unipod

The computer 2m away from me has one, and I've heard nothing about problems with it from him. It is fully unlocked. |

What do you mean by buggy? What problems are there with it? Cheers! |

Well, not wishing to sound like a complete moaner... Um - on the aesthetics side, there's the mouse icon - which got totally trashed (looks like a block of randomly coloured pixels) - but apparently this is a known bug (which makes it alright?) when using Unipod with StrongARM/Kinetic/Select (I forget which). Then there's the fact that I can't seem to do anything with it. It was supposed to have unlocked the USB and networking, but no go. Installed all the software that came with it and carefully followed the instructions, but to no avail. No documentation that came with it indicated how I might be able to recognise correctly functioning USB, but on plugging in a USB device, I'd have expected the system to respond in some way. So, wanting a mouse pointer back (as the 'guess which pixel in the block is where the mouse is pointing today' was not my idea of fun) I removed the card. Alas! Now something is broken in the boot sequence, and I no longer boot into the screen resolution/colour depth of my choice (though !Boot seems to think I have, as when I hit Monitor configuration, it claims already to be in the correct screen mode). I don't mind too much as I can live with a little tweak everytime I reboot. (Though I wish things like this didn't happen!) So I called STD a couple of times, left messages - but I guess they're really busy with the mass loads of work they were reporting at the time 'cos nobody got back to me. Maybe I'll give them a try again sometime soon. |

I had that mouse pointer problem in our Selected Kinetic without having a Unipod. Try contacting Stuart again. |

The misinformation about pointer didn't come from us, as it's not a "known bug (which makes it alright?)". As AndrewD indicates it's nothing to do with Unipod. We emailed Lewis at the time asking for tests, backplane reseating, confirmation that a certain manufacturers network card hadn't been removed (as removing it without the software barfs the boot sequence - talk about brand loyalty), boot sequence tests etc. As always, and in the absence of a response to our tests, I'm sure that Matt would be happy to run through things in detail on the phone. |

Apologies for the bad press, then. Maybe my spamfiter did away with your message. Can you resend the email? |
