Something for the weekend

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 17:59, 8/2/2002 | , , , , ,

Just before I nip off home, here's a few bits and pieces to keep you amused...

The RISCOS Ltd. site has a news item entitled "Embedded RISC OS announced", which sounds very much like a rehash of the RON project. The words horse, dead and flogging came to mind, but reading further it's used in Castle's Neuron system. Which is nice.

Acorn User have updated their website to go with their new look magazine. The concensus on the forums seems to be that the new look mag is a hit, although I don't get the chance to find out at first hand :(

And interesting doo-dad of the week goes to !Chromax, which can take 256 colour sprites and swap tints for other tints. No doubt that'll come in handy now I've got off my backside and started looking at the desktop themes code again, pink Aqua-styled toolbars anybody...?

Hmm, bit of a slow news week, what else can I post? Have you seen these BBC Micro models? Yes? Oh well, I'm off home then. See you next week...

Unregistered user I take it that RON is still happening.

It had better be, as I've just bought a netBook.

Unregistered user Sorry David, RON is not happening. That is the latest news from inside RiscOS Ltd that they don't want you to know yet. I guess this really was flogging a dead horse.

Sorry you wasted your money.

Unregistered user I think 'Guest' is talking complete rubbish. We've only heard positive things from RISCOS Ltd about RON. Why idiots like 'Guest' feel the needs to waste our time and pains with their FUD really baffles me.

Unregistered user The same with Guests who just blindly advocate and believe anything they're told, too, I suppose :)

Unregistered user wouldnt be surprised :)
its a shame that for posting comments that the iconbar couldnt just have it so that you logged in/entered your name & email otherwise you dont post really, or at least gave you the option to put in your name, so that all the anonomous ones could be deleted :)

Unregistered user Are RISC OS Ltd doing anything more interesting than pointless minor alterations to the user interface?

If not, are people really going to keep subscribing to select just to get these superficial updates?

Unregistered user Paul, where does it say that RON isn't happening in the newsletter? The only mention of RON is in the Embedded RISC OS announcement where it says that the SA1100/1110 support will be as a result of the RON project, which makes it sound to me as though it is happening.

Unregistered user Paul, can we have a direct quote from ROL please re the announcment that RON will not be created?

I don't doubt you but I'd like some direct quotes.

Richard.

Unregistered user What is so attractive about Embedded RISC OS anyway? People may advocate the "small footprint" but there are plenty of minimal operating systems for embedded purposes on far more architectures than RISC OS supports. Moreover, embedded open source operating systems are proving that developers don't need to spend all their money on licences for proprietary operating systems that they can't change or customize (or only with significant restrictions).

Didn't Acorn try to go embedded before their demise? I can't wait for Embedded BBC MOS 1.2...

Unregistered user Yes, I'd like to have a definite answer on this.

I've just resubscribed to the Foundation so that I can read this for myself. (not sure how long it will take them to process my form)

This could be a real coup outside of our market. There are a lot of of unhappy netBook users atm. If ROL can add decent network drivers to RON then I think a lot of poeple may be interested.

For an example of unhappy netBook people see:

Unregistered user No, that was really Paul Vigay. Having now checked the Foundation newsletter he forwarded on to me he now thinks it might have been a Select mail list message, and has gone home to check. Well, he went home to be not at the office overnight, but you know what I mean ;)

Unregistered user Damn, you mean I subscribed to the Foundation to get an email that doesn't exist.

I'm certainly not subscribing to Select for this info. That would too expensive, just to satisfy my curiosity.

Unregistered user "Oh would it really, Mark Quint or should I say Bart Simpson!"
depending on whether i should have got summit from that.. :/
hrm, someone having a bad day?
stop wasting your time slagging off other RiscOS users, it seems all too common atm, and its killing the market.
& hows about keeping on topic rather than wandering off to the land of yellow people :)

Unregistered user David, there has been a new Foundation Newsletter. It was sent out on 8 Feb. There is no indication the RON has been scrapped. Only upbeat information about the Embedded RISC OS, new look Acorn User, Smart Groups, SVG Files, Membership renewals and a one two other things. RON is still on as far as I can tell.
