Braben seems to have rebranded Elite IV and is out looking for backers. I'm sceptical.

I'm sceptical.
So am I. A (similarly-funded) open source sequel would be preferable. This would help with possible porting to other platforms.

The testing videos in the background of this interview look interesting...

This will need to be very, very good - a quick look around YouTube at the stuff created by amateurs these days shows just how high the bar is for Elite-inspired space games:

+1 Skepticism

His track record isn't brilliant, and he's started and restarted Elite 4 many times...

But that probably won't stop the horde with the rose-tinted specs forking over their dosh!

Open-source and no funding required... try oolite:

Personally I wouldn't fund a game up-front unless it was open-source; if you pay for it to be developed why should they own the code?

The video they've posted up now makes it sound a lot like they want to make EVE Online.

Missed the point. Oolite is just a remake of the classic Elite in a modern format, with various customisations and extensions thrown in. The point of Elite IV/Dangerous is that it's to be massively multiplayer, something which Oolite quite clearly isn't.

Missed the point.

I actually started writing a long reply about open-source and commercial products and relative sources of funding, but I realised all it would do was kick off another pointless GPL/OSS/freetard flamewar on the subject, which I think we can all do without.

Someone over at the oolite site is currently testing a multi-player 'eliteesque' (this has long been a topic for discussion over there as some feel it's not in the original spirit of the game). It's still early stages yet but those interested should pop along, they don't bite, as there's also an interesting discussion re the Dangerous version.
